Serbia’s top female swimmer on winning streak-Higl: I am stunned by result in Sweden

Serbian swimmer Nadja Higl has been on a series of winning results, with the latest success coming from the short-course World Cup in Sweden, where Higl won the gold. She also managed to swim the national record in the 200m breaststroke event 2:18. 54.
Following her win at the World Cup in Durban, South Africa, this has come as yet another gold medal for Higl in her preparations for the European short course Championships to take place 10 through 13 December in Istanbul.
Higl was far from being euphoric after the magnificent result, leaving behind European record-holder Rikke Moller-Pedersen of Denmark.
- I am pleased with the result as everything went fine. I swam the best that I could and my style proved to be enough for a win. To be perfectly honest, ahead of the race I hadnt believed I could enter the top three because my opponents were excellent swimmers, says Higl.
The Serbian fell just short of breaking the European record.
- I talked with my brother about how I should swim, and I did everything the way wed agreed and it seems even he was a bit stunned with the result I achieved. Now we are moving on and focusing on the European Championships in Istanbul, said the reigning 200m breaststroke world champion.

Djokovic downs Soderling in Paris! SF vs Nadal!

Third-seeded Novak Djokovic booked his place in the semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Masters (2,750,000), the last ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament of the year, beating world no.10 Robin Soderling of Sweden in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in 1 hour and 57 minutes.
Soderling opened match with a solid service hold to 15. Djokovic started slowly and handed the Swede three break points in the second game, but saved them with great serves. No.9 seed missed his fourth chance with a forehand into the net and Novak held with a service winner. The 22-year-old made a break in the third game and then increased his lead to 3-1. Soderling broke back in the eighth game to equalise the result, but Nole broke him once again and won the set 6-4.
Djokovic lost his rhythm in the second set. Soderling was dominating. The Swede made two breaks and took it 6-1 in just 27 minutes.
World no.4 made a crucial break in the eighth game of the third set and then served it out for final score 6-3.
“It was a real struggle”, said Djokovic after the match. “In the second set I wasn’t moving very well; I was fighting myself, letting him play and control the match. I managed to focus when I needed to and hold the nerves and I’m happy to be in the semi-finals.”
Novak will play against world no.2 Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals. The Spaniard beat no.8 seed defending champion Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets 7-5, 7-5.
Djokovic and Nadal have met 19 times, Rafa leads 14-5. Nole won their last match in Cincinnati 6-1, 6-4.
The 22-year-old Serb has advanced to four ATP World Tour Masters 1000 finals this season (Miami, Monte Carlo, Rome, Cincinnati).
The semi-final match is scheduled on Saturday at 14.30 CET.

Judge orders retrial in Travolta extortion case

NASSAU, Bahamas – A judge has ordered a mistrial in the case of an alleged extortion attempt against John Travolta and a top court official said Thursday a new trial is not likely to start before next year.
Senior Justice Anita Allen said Wednesday night she was reluctantly ordering a new trial because a politician announced that one of the defendants would be freed, giving the appearance of an improper leak from the jury room.
"The dilemma that we face is great," Allen said in court. "I am erring on the side of caution. Justice must be transparent."
Bahamas chief magistrate Roger Gomez said that the new trial is not likely to start until early 2010 because the court's calendar is full through the rest of this year.
Ambulance driver Tarino Lightbourne and his attorney, politician Pleasant Bridgewater, were accused of demanding $25 million from Travolta to keep them from releasing private information about the death of Travolta's 16-year-old son Jett at the family vacation home in Grand Bahama on Jan. 2. They denied the allegations.
Bridgewater resigned her seat in the Bahamas Senate after she was charged in the case.
Jurors were still deliberating when lawmaker Picewell Forbes announced to an audience at a Progressive Liberal Party convention that party member Bridgewater would be cleared.
"Pleasant is a free woman, PLPs! God is good, PLPs! Pleasant is a free woman!" Forbes said, prompting cheers and an outburst of song from the crowd.
Soon after, Alex Storr, the party's deputy chairman-elect, said Forbes had misspoken. He said the information was incorrect and no verdict had been issued. He apologized on behalf of the party.
But the judge said that Forbes' comment gave her no choice but to dismiss the jurors.
The jury, which deliberated about nine hours, had spent a month listening to testimony including from Travolta, who flew to the Bahamas to take the stand. Michael Ossi, one of the actor's attorneys, said his client would cooperate in any way possible and testify again if necessary.
"We are committed to seeing this through, and we are committed to seeing justice served," Ossi said. "And whatever the prosecution asks us to do is exactly what we will do."
Lawyers for the defendants told the nine-member jury that their clients were set up by lawyers for Travolta. They also said authorities misinterpreted their actions.
The alleged plot centered on a document that would have released emergency responders from liability if the family refused an ambulance ride to the hospital for Jett, who suffered a deadly seizure.
Travolta said he signed the waiver because he initially wanted his autistic son flown directly to Florida for treatment. But he later changed his mind, and the document did not come into play.
The actor testified that Lightbourne threatened to sell stories to the media suggesting that he was at fault in his son's death.

Istanbul exhibit seeks to reveal city's soul

PARIS – The glories of Istanbul have arrived in Paris.
From white marble statues of Greek and Roman gods to gleaming medieval Christian icons to a huge red Ottoman tent, an exhibition devoted to Istanbul seeks to expand French awareness of the city's multicultural heritage in a country deeply skeptical of Turkey's European aspirations.
Some 300 works of art from museums in 14 countries in Europe, Turkey and Qatar cap two years of work to create the exhibit "From Byzantium to Istanbul" at the Grand Palais. Some of the pieces from Turkish museums have left their country for the first time.
Bathed in subdued red light, the exhibition takes the visitor through 8,000 years of history of the "city of a hundred names" known as Byzantium, then Constantinople and now Istanbul. It focuses on its role linking Europe and Asia as "one port for two continents."
The exhibition, opened this month by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Turkish President Abdullah Gul, is the centerpiece of the "Year of Turkey," a panoply of some 400 Turkish cultural events over nine months offering everyone a chance to become better acquainted with Turkey's culture.
"(Istanbul) always has been a multicultural city, with many different languages, ethnicities, religions," said Nazan Olcer, director of the Sakip Sanci Museum in Istanbul and curator of the exhibition.
"I wanted to bring also this colorful face of the city to the exhibition. Maybe, you know, you cannot change all the prejudices with one exhibition only, but at least you can try to open a window to the visitor, to ask him to think differently," she told The Associated Press in an interview.
Olcer says she has collaborated on many international exhibitions that included art from Turkey. Some had focused just on Ottoman art, some on different periods of Turkish art and sometimes just one period of the Turks.
The decision to extend the time span and to focus on Istanbul gives the visitor insight into the array of cultures that have shaped the city, as well as its major role as capital of the Christian Byzantine and the Islamic Ottoman empires.
"The strategy was this. We all are sometimes tending to simplify many things. If Byzantium was a Christian capital, so we think it's been only a Christian capital. If we say after the conquest, after the fall, all of a sudden it has become an Islamic capital. No. It was not like this. Istanbul has been always a multicultural city," she said.
The visitor begins by looking at artifacts from the Neolithic era and glides into the 8th century B.C., when Greek settlers developed a flourishing port they called Byzantium. A stern marble head of the Greek god Heracles stares out, a stark reminder of the city's classical heritage. Next, a bust of the Roman emperor Constantine, who transformed Byzantium into the capital of his eastern Christian empire in the 4th century.
Golden icons and crosses as well as chalices elaborately decorated with precious stones and pearls evoke the long centuries of the city's Christian era when it was known as Constantinople.
Key to understanding the exhibition is a striking section devoted to Mehmed II, who conquered Constantinople in 1453 at age 21 and ended Byzantine rule. His childhood notes written in Turkish using Arabic script and a letter he wrote to the Italian painter Gentile Bellini inviting him from Venice are displayed alongside a 13th-century copy of Homer's Iliad in Greek, one of the seven languages Mehmet knew.
The exhibition includes portraits by Italian painters of Mehmed and his successors, including Suleyman the Magnificent, a testament to European fascination with the east.
Turkey's ethnic and religious minorities long present in Istanbul do not figure prominently, but they are not absent. Engraved stone funeral steles in Armenian, Hebrew and Greek document the city's diversity.
The exhibition ends on a contemporary note with a room devoted to a slideslow of color photographs of the city today and a remarkable display of artifacts of an ancient Byzantine port discovered in 2004 during the construction of an underwater metro station.
"Maybe this exhibition also can open new windows for them (visitors) by looking at the old city with all of its secrets," Olcer said.

Ivanovic hoping respite is the answer

Ana Ivanovic is on vacation in an undisclosed sunny locale, which is what she’s been saying she needs for a while now, and exactly where her fans should want her to be.
The former No. 1 shut things down a couple of weeks ago, withdrawing from the China Open with a respiratory infection and foregoing any more play in 2009. Most players are content with revealing a minimum amount of information on such occasions, but not Ivanovic, who wrote an earnest, blunt confessional to her fans that also was e-mailed to journalists.
“I guess having to withdraw from Beijing is an appropriate ending to a very disappointing season,” Ivanovic began. She was No. 11 at the time and has since slipped to No. 14, but readily admitted the numbers aren’t reflective of her play or state of mind: “I have no idea how I am ranked so highly, but to look on the bright side, I can’t play any worse than I did this year, and I’m still in the top 20!”
The 21-year-old Serbian has suffered through a lot of minor yet troublesome injuries in the 13 months since she fell from her perch at the top of the WTA rankings, but by far the worst bleeding was internal. After a heady run to the 2008 French Open title, her confidence drained almost visibly week by week.
Both in her recent letter and in a gallant, teary-eyed press conference following an ugly, first-round loss to Kateryna Bondarenko at the U.S. Open, Ivanovic described a self-destructive cycle where she would push too hard in rehab, press too much when she got back into matches, then get injured again and interrupt any small momentum she’d built up. “Instead of being patient and accepting that my best form was almost impossible due to physical limitations, I was always over thinking things, and I never dealt with it very well,” she wrote.
The worst disappointments came at the worst times. Ivanovic has not managed to advance past the round of 16 in six Slams since she won Roland Garros. She looked as if she might be turning things around at Wimbledon this summer when she breezed past Samantha Stosur in straight sets to book a fourth-round meeting with Venus Williams, but hurt her thigh during the match and was forced to retire in the second set.
“If she only could have at least completed the match against Venus, it wouldn’t have been as devastating, but there she was, doing physiotherapy on what was supposed to be a holiday,” said her agent, Gavin Versi.
ESPN analyst Pam Shriver agreed with Ivanovic’s tough self-assessment, saying the building blocks of her game have toppled like dominoes. “Whatever aura she had ran out, and people realized she was vulnerable,” Shriver said. “While [Dinara] Safina had her meltdowns in the late stages of Slams, Ivanovic was having hers in the early rounds.”

This trip to Asia has been a big disappointment and I have struggled with my health pretty much since I arrived. I am sorry to my supporters who were hoping to see me play here in Beijing. According to multiple reports, a wrongful termination lawsuit has been brought against Oprah Winfrey and her company Harpo Inc. by the media mogul's former stewardess Corinne Gehrls.
Gehrls is firing back at allegations that she and married pilot Terry Pansing did the nasty during a flight with Winfrey on board her posh private jet—claims which resulted in their July 7 termination.
Also named in the Chicago defamation suit are fellow flight attendants Myron Gooch and Kirby Bumpus—who happens to be the daughter of Oprah BFF Gayle King. The canned stewardess says the two "falsely told Winfrey and Harpo" that she and Pansing "had been observed having inappropriate intimate contact outside the cockpit of the plane."
Gehrls has vehemently denied the allegations, going so far as to take—and pass—a polygraph test on the advice of her lawyer. Pansing reportedly did the same.
Winfrey's former employee is seeking more than $300,000 in damages.

Perhaps Kanye West is finally taking that much needed "time off" from his stage-hijacking shenanigans.
After stealing Taylor Swift's thunder at the MTV Video Music Awards, the rapper bailed on the Fourth Annual BET Hip-Hop Awards Saturday evening, giving up his nine chances to stage yet another remix-worthy acceptance-speech-crashing moment.
While YouTubers across the country were probably chomping at the bit for that video-posting opportunity, it's safe to say the self-proclaimed egomaniac saved himself a beat-down by not jumping onstage with a nominee competitor like Young Jeezy or Rick Ross.
Top nominees turned no-shows was somewhat of a theme for the awards show, held at the Atlanta Civic Center. The runner-up to West's bevy of nominations, T.I., was missing in action as a result of his lockdown in an Arkansas prison on a federal weapons charge.
But that didn't stop the rapper from taking home two awards...
The six-time nominee won Best Collaboration for "Live Your Life" with Rihanna and Album of the Year for Paper Trail. His fiancée, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle, accepted his awards on his behalf, and read a letter from the American Gangstar star.
"Although I'm not there with you all, I'm there in spirit," Cottle read. "My road to redemption is almost over…thanks for the support."
Other actor/rappers also scored big at the awards show, with newcomer and former Degrassi star Drake winning Rookie of the Year and gangster rapper turned First Sunday star Ice Cube taking home the I Am Hip-Hop icon award.
Hip-hop spinners were also included in the ceremony. Busta Rhymes stood in to collect the award for DJ of the Year for the late DJ AM.
"I'm honored to accept this," he said.
One of the highlights of the show included legendary rapper Jay-Z, who was honored with the MVP of the Year award, taking the stage with Young Jeezy and performing "Real As It Gets."
We're hoping Lil' Mama did not hop onstage and strike a b-boy stance for that one.
The rapper—who was also a surprise guest performer during Jeezy's opening number—dedicated the award to Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and Mr. Magic.
"Brooklyn, we did it again," he said.
The awards show airs Oct. 27 on BET.

Zookeeper' monkeys evacuated from Boston hotel

BOSTON – Two movie-star monkeys and crew members of the Adam Sandler film "The Zookeeper" are among the 300 guests who were evacuated from a Boston hotel after carbon monoxide alarms went off.
Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald says a small boiler leak at the luxury Liberty hotel prompted elevated readings at around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. He says the leak was fixed early afternoon and no one was hurt.
Liberty spokesman Jim Treadway says the hotel has also hosted the non-animal stars of "The Zookeeper," but none slept over Wednesday. He declined to drop names.
"The Zookeeper" made headlines earlier this month when a teenage boy fell into a lion pit at the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston that was part of the movie set. No animals were in the area, and the boy was not badly hurt.
